Potty training
Potty and toilet training
Potty training does not happen overnight! Every child develops differently and one child may take only a week, while another needs several months. You will usually be able to tell if your child is ready to start potty training.
Potty training steps
Potty training is a process that involves several stages. The most important part of potty training is explaining everything to your child: the difference between going number one and number two, when to take off your trousers, and when to sit on the toilet seat insert or on a potty. Naturally you also need to explain about wiping, putting trousers back on and, equally as important, washing hands afterwards!
Potty training is a matter of trial and error
When potty training, it is important to reassure your child and to emphasise that “practice makes perfect!”. Potty training is a matter of trial and error, so you might want to reward your child even when things do not go as planned as a form of encouragement. Stress can also affect potty training. So every success, both big and small, is a victory in itself!
What products do you need for potty training?
Children want to act like adults and will mimic their parents. An adult toilet is therefore interesting to them. But there are large numbers of products available these days to make potty training a much easier and more fun experience for your child. But what kinds of products do you really need for potty training? The most common ones are a potty, toilet seat insert or training seat, and step stools.
Potty
A potty can easily be used both indoors and out. Choose a potty with a comfortable seat that makes it possible for your child to keep his or her feet on the ground. A stable anti-slip edge helps prevent messes. When potty training, it is important that the potty be easy for the parent or guardian to clean.
Toilet seat
Naturally a toilet seat insert for toddlers has a logical connection to one particular room of the house. So make sure you have the same type of toilet seat insert on every toilet. The most hygienic version is a child toilet seat that can be placed on the regular toilet seat with one hand and that has a splash guard. An easy-to-adjust toilet seat insert with solid anti-slip edge fits on most toilets and is comfortable and easy to use for potty training.
Step stool
A step stool is a practical aid when potty training when used together with a toilet seat insert. This makes it possible for your child to use the big people,s toilet all by him or herself. There are special step stools available that are especially designed for toilet use; they are fitted with a special notch.
