Bottle-feeding

Bottle-feeding and nipples

Breastfeeding and bottle-feeding are two completely different types of feeding. Detailed information on both types can be obtained from your infant welfare centre, lactation expert or online.

Feeding your newborn

During the first few days, the maternity nurse will prepare formula for bottle-feeding and explain how much your baby needs during each feeding. Naturally the amount of formula that your baby needs will depend on your baby’s weight.

Many women start with breastfeeding and then switch to bottle-feeding or alternate breastfeeding with bottle-feeding.

There is no reason to buy a breast pump before you have decided whether to bottle-feed or breastfeed - and have learned whether or not you are even able to breastfeed. After your baby is born, you will discover quickly which type of feeding you prefer and will have plenty of time to get a breast pump. It is advisable to rent one in the beginning. One popular brand is Medela. Either way, make sure you have different types of baby bottles in house.

Breast pump and baby bottle (bottle-feeding)

When you buy a breast pump, it often comes with a baby bottle for bottle-feeding. The pumped breast milk can be easily used with all types of baby bottles.

Information on bottle-feeding

When you first start bottle-feeding, you need to know how much formula or breast milk your baby needs. The infant welfare centre, maternity nurse and/or your doctor can provide you with detailed information on this. There are also numerous websites with information on bottle-feeding. It is relatively easy to prepare a bottle for bottle-feeding. The most common formula brands clearly state on the packaging how to prepare for bottle-feeding and come with a measuring spoon.

Which type of bottle and nipple is best?

The choice between a nursing bottle or bottle with handles depends on your press roomonal preference. Baby bottles come in a wide range of shapes and styles. The bottles used for bottle-feeding with formula usually have a nipple with the smallest sized hole designed for newborns. The nipples also come in a wide range of shapes and sizes, depending on the baby’s age and type of formula. A three-flow nipple can be a practical solution: the size of the nipple hole can be varied by turning the baby bottle.
